postheadericon Elegantly Designed Wine Cellars in Los Angeles, California

Custom Wine Cellar Los Angeles CA – Beautifully Designed As a wine enthusiast myself, I’ve seen so many beautiful wine cellars already. One of the best that I’ve seen is in Los Angeles California. This custom wine cellar was a challenge to design but in the end, the result was outstanding.

One of the few challenges in the designing of this wine cellar Los Angeles was that the client desired a custom wine cellar that that could conveniently store his collection of 3816 wine bottles. Also, this huge wine collection was comprised of bottles that varied in sizes. The client wanted all of these bottles to fit in standard racking. Lastly, the client wanted a quality cooling system installed. He wanted this cooling system to efficiently maintain the appropriate temperature in the wine cellar room to preserve the quality of his wines.

Amidst all the challenges in the designing phase, the cellar was built successfully. Read more of this article to get a preview of the wine cellar’s awesome features.

Two Priorities in the Design – Durability and Elegance This wine cellar Los Angeles California is perhaps one of the largest wine cellar projects that I know. This wine cellar was made to be 40′ of counter height and built to fit a room with 10 foot ceiling height. Because of the hugeness of this wine cellar, an 8′ rolling library type ladder was built too so that the client can conveniently reach wine bottles that are stored above the 8′ height.

Heart Redwood was the material used in the construction of this beautiful wine cellar. This type of wood is taken from the core of the redwood tree. This wood is known for distinct dark colors with soft earth tone variations that develop overtime. This type of wood is highly recommended by a lot of design professionals because of its durability against shock, decay, and changes in humidity. To further improve the wine cellar’s life span, the wood was coated with a clear lacquer finish. This lacquer finish will protect the wood from accidental spills.

This cellar was also built with a 4 inch toe kick or base in order to keep the racks off the floor. This feature protects the racks from unintended foot bumps.

Bottles of All Sizes Can Be Stored in the Wine Racks The client’s collection comprises bottles of varied sizes including split bottles, champagnes, and magnums. Since the client desired to have all these bottles stored in standard racking, the designer made sure that the wine racks had large sized bottle openings. The size of the bottle openings is large enough to store any bottle of any size in the market.

Dependable Cooling System The client wanted a quality wine cooling system that could preserve the quality of his wines. The designer ensured that the wine cooling system installed in this wine cellar was one that could be able to effective maintain the temperature to 55-60 degrees. The cooling system installed was a ductless refrigeration system. It was also concealed with a grill box and a louvered vent cover. Plus, a Heart redwood cover coated with a clear lacquer finish was made in order to have the cooling system match the cellar’s wood.

The Exquisite Wine Cellar Entry Door One feature that makes this custom wine cellar Los Angeles CA stand out is it’s beautiful wine cellar entry door. This unique feature was designed to be made of glass and arched. It was also built with an iron grill for protection. It is important to have installed a secure wine cellar door because this will determine the temperature control in your wine cellar room. Fluctuations in the room’s temperature can greatly affect the quality of your wine stores.

This Los Angeles wine cellar door depicts a perfect mix of elegance, durability, and functionality. This feature was the cherry on top of this wine cellar project.

postheadericon A Hardly Fundamental Guide to Building Custom Wine Cellars

Wine storage is rather simple and easy if you’re going to consume your wine within 6 months of purchasing them. It does get harder, however, if you’re planning to store wines for a long period of time. If you’re lucky enough to discover one, you can actually store your wines in caves or caverns where it’s entirely below ground level since they are especially cool and humid throughout the year. A similar, yet more costly, choice is to excavate one. Many people, however, are neither fortunate enough to find a cavern nearby nor privileged to be able to build one without having to be burdened by extraordinary costs and troubles. Artificially cooled and humidified custom wine cellars can be a much better alternative. In any case, the following are essential attributes of an effective wine cellar:

The temperature stays cool, ideally, in between 55 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mold usually sets in above 90 percent humidity. It’s best to keep your wine cellar at a humidity of 60-80 percent.

The temperature in your wine storage area must be constant. Fluctuations in temperature can ruin wines.

The area should be free from all sorts of vibrations, which can travel through and ruin the wine. Heavy traffic and motors cycling on and off, such as in freezers, washers or dryers, are harmful to your wine.

All light is kept to a minimum. Ultraviolet light is especially harmful to wine.

For whatever functionality it serves you, a good wine storage facility, with the right temperature and humidity levels, is an absolute necessity. Improperly kept wines make disappointments and frustrations inevitable. Should you decide to age wine, you will need a storage facility with regulated temperature and humidity. This is especially critical if you live in regions where temperatures go beyond 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) for any amount of time.

Proper Humidity Levels

Some wine collectors are not particularly concerned about the humidity level of their customized wine cellars. However, high humidity levels cause mold and ruin labels. Very low humidity can overly dry the cork and deteriorate the airtight seal, making it possible for oxygen to seep in or cause your wine to evaporate or leech out around the cork. This causes too much ullage, which is the space between the wine and the cork. The greater the ullage, the greater the danger of oxidizing your wine. Additionally, air conditioning units are not suitable for custom wine cellars because they usually dehumidify the air to around 50 percent.

Buy a hygrometer (an instrument that measures humidity) for your custom wine cellars. Hygrometers determine both the percentage of humidity and give a digital reading of the temperature. Such information is so critical that we should check it almost daily.

Avoid refrigerators for storing wine. Good wine or Champagne shouldn’t be kept in the refrigerator for more than a week. Not only is the refrigerator motor unit harmful, but the very chilly temperature, in most cases as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees Celsius) can numb your wine and flatten its taste.

Heating and cooling

Professional wine cooling systems are different from air conditioning units. Wine cellar cooling units are climate control devices that are distinctively designed to humidify the air of a wine cellar, not to mention cool it to the exact values you require. These types of wine cellar cooling units come in different capacities to suit customized wine cellars of various sizes. Many units, specifically split type cooling units, require qualified personnel for installation. The costs of wine cooling units are commonly based on their capacity and capabilities. Self-contained wine cooling units are usually meant only for interior walls. But a more powerful model for exterior walls of the same cooling unit type can be bought at a steeper price.

Wine racks

The choice of material and configuration depends mainly on how much you are prepared to spend and, obviously, your personal taste. Wine racks vary from complex redwood wine racks to plain plastic or metal types.

Good sized, diamond-shaped wine racks are usually preferred mainly because they efficiently maximize storage capacity and can even store numerous wine bottles per section. These types of racks also enable you to conveniently add or remove individual bottles. Moreover, the piled wine bottles naturally suppress temperature swings since they just pass around the heat until it dissipates. Meanwhile, single bottle wine racks that give each bottle of wine its own cubicle are usually less affordable. However, they protect the bottles and labels much better. If you’re going to check out this style of wine racks, see whether any of your large sized bottles can fit into the cubicles.

Some collectors also like to store their wine in their original wooden crates. Many classic wines, such as Bordeaux and Vintage Port, are packaged in these crates. Empty wooden crates are also available in wine stores. The dark environment found inside these crates benefits wines. The problem with it, however, is if you need to retrieve a bottle from the bottom. Inconvenient yet manageable. Lastly, do NOT use cardboard boxes. The usually ideal damp climate in custom wine cellars will eventually destroy cardboard boxes.

Materials for insulation

Far more valuable compared to your choice of racks is your selection of insulation. The ideal insulation material must be odorless, doesn’t absorb moisture, and produces quite a tight seal. Even when a wine cooling unit isn’t running, temperatures will change gradually in most wine rooms with this kind of insulation. A minimum R-value of R11 is usually required for indoor walls and R19 is the minimum for ceilings and external walls. R-value is the measurement of the rate at which an insulator decreases heat flow through walls.

Wine cellar doors should also be weather stripped and insulated as well. Although the thought of wine cellar doors seem unimportant initially, you’ll quickly realize that they’re rather vital. Inadequately insulated doors are the number one cause of wine cooling unit problems. Incessant running, which is caused by escaping cool air, reduces the lifespan of wine cellar cooling systems. If you’re planning to make use of glass on your wine cellar doors, use Insulated Glass Units since they’re resistant against clouding.

postheadericon All You Need To Know About Buying Wine

Wine is one of the finest beverages the world has to offer today. It’s commonplace at all kinds of parties along with weddings, bar mitzvahs and even simply casual get-togethers. However, there are multiple types of wine and several brands so buying it can be very confusing for someone who is only getting started. First, there are four types of wine that you’ll be able to choose from. These include white wines, red wines, blush wine beverages and dessert wines.

Red wines can be broke down in to categories like cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, zinfandel and so are the most commonly consumed wines at dinner. White wines – chardonnay and Riesling mostly – are very common to have with light meals or meals which take place earlier in the day time. Blush wines are mostly employed for picnics – they are rarely used with large meals. And dessert wines like ports and also Sherries are typically had with dessert-type food items.

Now that the types of wines happen to be explained, it’s time to explain the way to decide which one you need. Many people hold to the “Three P’s” when it comes to buying wine from local wine makers. The first “P” in the equation represents price which is often a identifying factor when it comes to purchasing anything at all. In fact, there are many types of wine beverages that can be bought for as little as $15 — good wines, too, expensive wine.

The next “P” usually stands for preference, which is a very important depth when it comes to picking out wines. If you’re throwing a party you have to be cautious picking wines because wines are an acquired flavor for many and they may be too strong for some people. Go with “softer” red-colored wines like merlot or even a pinot noir to make sure to avoid this problem and that every person enjoys themselves. And if you want a white wine instead, purchase chardonnay or pinot blanc instead.

The final “P” means pairing with is important as well. When buying a wine, think about what you’re going to be drinking it with. White wines move best with lighter foods like fish or poultry while red wines might be best suited for meals that contain red meat. No matter the choice, following the “Three P’s” is the best way to pick the perfect wine beverages.

postheadericon The Many Different Kinds Of Wine Racks

Wine holders hold wine. They store and organize wine, and can be made of any number of various materials in any number of various sizes. Also known as wine racks, large ones could be found in a professional wine cellar while much smaller designs may be wall-mounted in the kitchen to conveniently display an amateur collection.

These latter types will sometimes incorporate wine glasses for a combination rack that holds both drink and implement. Speaking of which, the truest wine holder of all is probably one’s own mouth! But for innovative aesthetics, nothing beats the man-made versions. Those constructed from metal are particularly imaginative.

The material itself provides for the greatest amount of creativity, allowing as it does fluid sinuous designs hard or even impossible to achieve with any wood or stone. Many are very whimsical, such as a common favorite where thin metal spirals hold wine bottles upside-down in a haphazard manner suggestive of intoxication!

Many who take their wines, and thus their display, seriously enough to consider such devices (as opposed to just putting them on a shelf in the fridge or pantry) will often favor wood because of the role it plays in formulating the flavor of many wines.

After all, wines are matured in wooden caskets for just that all-important reason, and several winemakers are even so careful as to factor in the species of wood used for their bottle corks! Therefore the bestselling styles are still wooden, even in the most modern of decors where chrome or stainless steel predominate.

Storing wine is really a serious affair if you care about taste. Ambient lighting and even the very angle at which bottles may be tilted during storage are said to help produce the flavor of a wine. Keeping your wine in a manner that both highlights the beauty of their bottling while protecting or aiding the creation of their flavors can be challenging, depending on how exacting your expectations.

postheadericon A Variety Of Wine Racks

Wine racks are important accessories for the true collector. Although the word “accessories” originally referred to those items which aren’t essential to a item but which might enhance the enjoyment of that item, in the case of wine racks they’re so helpful in organizing and displaying one’s collection that they’re truly quite necessary, especially when a collection runs into the multiple scores or even hundreds.

But when speaking of wine racks, one typically thinks of a casual collection, almost amateur in its scope – though the proud owner may be just as devoted as any professional trader or dealer. This kind of display rack is normally wall-mounted in a prominent spot, for instance the kitchen (most often) or den.

These racks are practically always very carefully chosen for their designs to complement the room as well as offer safe storage. Most such racks or holders are made out of wood while others are wrought of iron. Wood is such a favorite material because of the role it plays in winemaking; many wines are carefully aged in wooden caskets prior to being bottled. Iron is a close second in popularity because the nature of metal is such that sinuous shapes may be created, a feature much harder to accomplish with wood.

While many of these racks offer only enough space for a few bottles, full-sized racks can take up an entire basement. For those who do not know their wine, it may seem extravagant to devote an entire level of one’s house, but practically all agree that simple holders are a fantastic way to store wine.

But people being people, there are even automated models out there which will pull your bottles for you! The super-fancy varieties can also be very expensive, but are very popular. But no matter which type is chosen, it’s much more elegant than basically stowing your bottles in a cupboard!

postheadericon How To Store Wine

Just like any other products, wine is bound to change its high quality over a particular period of time. Correct wine storage can make sure that these environmental factors do not affect the high quality of the great wine. This can be done easily by controlling the amount of light, temperature, oxygen, humidity and variations that affect the wine. Air is recognized to spoil the high quality of wine and it should therefore be stored inside a way that air is kept away. Air leads to oxidation within the wine which then causes the quality of the wine to decrease. This makes the wine taste like vinegar and not wine.

Glass bottles are impermeable to oxygen and therefore using the correct cork is the greatest method to ensure that air is locked out of the wine bottle. The cork ought to be moist and also ensure that other than the oxygen left in the bottle throughout packaging, no other oxygen leaks into the wine.

Additionally, storing wine horizontally also ensures that the cork doesn’t crack and therefore no oxygen gets into the bottle. Humidity inside a room is also known to make corks moist and hence grow mildew or to dry up too much and therefore crack. Storing wine inside a bottle proportionate to the wine is also essential as there’s less oxygen within the bottle. If a small wine is left in a bottle, it ought to be transferred to a smaller bottle until consumed. The wine should also be stored inside a room where you will find small vibrations or movement. They should also not be moved a lot of until they’re nearly being served. This is mainly because vibrations causes the high quality from the wine to reduce and ought to be avoided as a lot as possible.

Temperature is an additional factor that ought to be considered throughout wine storage. The temperature should be about 5 to18C in order to keep the cork moist enough and so not shrink or to allow in oxygen and cause the wine to age quicker than normal. A wine cellar can maintain these temperatures and that’s why most people store their wines there. However, wine cabinets can also be used when the room temperature is regulated.

In addition, the rate at which the temperature changes is also essential simply because if it modifications by more than 10C on a frequent basis, the high quality of the wine may be compromised. The light that seeps via the wine bottle should also be reduced. Numerous wine makers today use ultra violet filters on their bottles to make sure that light does not go via. An unpleasant aroma will be created if there’s too much light passing via the wine bottle.
